Advancing Sustainability
Regiane Dutra / Responsible for application development in Brazil and Pacific Coast / ExxonMobil

Laura Martinelli - South America Customer & Application Development / ExxonMobil / Brasil

ExxonMobil is taking action to enable a circular economy for plastics by offering plastic recycling solutions and increasing the supply of certified circular plastics. Our advanced recycling facility in the US is operational and we have plans to expand our global plastic waste recycling capacity to 1 billion pounds per year by end of 2026.  Additionally we are collaborating across the value chain on initiatives to help improve collection and sorting systems so that more plastic can be recycled. In this presentation we are going to provide an overview of what we are doing to help advance sustainability and the role we see advanced and mechanical recycling technologies playing to create a circular economy for plastics.

Due to the prevalence and importance of mechanical recycling today in Latin America, we will then focus the presentation on the mechanical recycle landscape of the region and discuss several additive approaches taken towards compatibilizing mixed PP/PE and its post-consumer recycle, with a view to how much mechanical properties were improved, how compatibility is achieved, and discuss a couple application examples.

Challenges and solutions for closed-loop PCR packaging (PET-PS-PP-PE)

Andres F. Grunewald / Latin America Gneuss Director / Brasil

The development of new technologies allows today to meet the packaging market with the use of post-consumer waste in direct contact with food. Today, the use of post-consumer packaging materials from various polymers in the manufacture of new packaging is real. Initially, the present technology only allowed PET bottles to be recycled into new bottles or thermoformed food packaging. Currently, the technology allows the manufacture of food packaging from post-consumer waste of PS, PP and PE from purely mechanical recycling.

Challenges:

- Collection
- Reject recovery
- Washing processes
- Food grade decontamination
- Case studies

Quality upgrade of recycled plastics

Manuela Feuerstein / Sales Manager / Eisbär / Áustria

When we are talking about recycling of plastics, we have to face different issues to reach an improvement and upgrade of the products. Eisbär systems are specialised on PP and PET recycling. HDPE post consumer packagings have a certain smell left, which is not disappearing after the regranulation. Together with Erema, Eisbär developed a system called "Refresher", that is able to remove the odours almost completely. Furthermore Eisbär is providing expertise for PET to PET recycling processes and will show some insights, ticks and tricks about crystallising and drying.

Challenges and solutions of recycled plastics in injection moulding

Klaus Fellner / In-house consultant for circular economy & recycling / ENGEL

New Technologies  and process optimization gives opportunities in the usage of recycling materials. The lecture gives answers to the following questions:  Which kind of recycling plastics can be used in injection moulding?  Which technologies are available for processing of recycling materials on an injection moulding machine? How to increase the amount of recycling material and the recyclability of a product? A prospective of recycled Material in the injection moulding business will be given.

Directcompounding brings new opportunities to the circular economy and the injection molding industry

Franz-Xaver Keilbach /  Global Product Manager Circular Economy / KraussMaffei / Germany

For injection molding, washed recyclates or plastic waste with limited contaminations are the perfect input material for directcompounding solutions. Invented by KraussMaffei the systems combine extrusion and injection molding. Two different machine platforms enable the production of small housings up to big and heavy pallets. Besides sustainability, the substitution of additional costs for compounding of the polymer is an important benefit. Within short time the operator reduces remarkable expenses.

Practical solutions for resource-efficient production in injection molding
Ing. Philipp Lenzinger / Area Sales Manager - Central/South America  / Wittmann Battenfeld GmbH

How can production costs be reduced due to rising raw material costs? What are the additional advantages of currently looking at new technologies in injection molding and what solutions are available in terms of energy savings in the production process?
Proven technologies in combination with practical solutions can bring enormous savings in raw materials in today's plastic injection molding. In this presentation we will give an insight into the possibilities we have to ensure a resource-efficient and energy-saving production going in line with highest productivity and product quality.

Questions & Answers

Twin screw extruders enable high quality and high quantity for recycled plastics
Franz-Xaver Keilbach / Global Product Manager Circular Economy / KraussMaffei / Germany

The circular economy looks more and more for high quality recyclates. Besides chemical recycling processes or comparable solutions, mechanical recycling is also able to reach high expectations on such requirements. The twin screw extruder brings the opportunity to recycle polymer waste and add fillers or additives within the same machine. The machine guaranties high mechanical parameters as well as homogeneity in color and material. Nowadays even the automatic control of color deviation is possible. With stripping agents and degassing devices malodorous volatiles can be reduced massively.

Solutions for crushing and grinding plastic materials

André Luis Lavignati - Director - TRIA do Brasil

In-line post-industrial thermoplastic material recovery system with production lines, off-line, post-consumer plastic material crushing and grinding systems. What is necessary to obtain a quality grinding with total reuse of materials.
